Shortly after my parents retired to their dream house on our land in Door County, WI, they experienced their first Wisconsin winter. As they were walking along the beach in Bailey’s Harbor, my dad spotted this migrating mute swan.
Crawling out onto the ice floes of Lake Michigan, he took this photo, while my mom helpfully shrieked in fear back on the shore.
Although dad was a pioneering photographer and took many beautiful pictures, this is definitely one of his finest. The swan has just lifted its head, and water is still running off its beak.
When dad died in the hospital in Sturgeon Bay in 1991, there was a large print of this photo in the hallway near his room (along with a large number of works by other super-talented Door County artists).
I offer this swan to you on behalf of my parents as their Christmas card for 2012.
