Oryoki — Just Right!

OryokiZen monks and practitioners eat as part of their meditation. Often they will even eat while sitting on their zafus, or meditation cushions. But the food must be slowly tasted and appreciated.

Additionally, they have small bowls. When the monk who is serving them comes around, they must indicate exactly how much they actually need (which varies with the individual). Nothing must be wasted, and greed is not allowed.

The term for these bowls is oryoki: “just enough” or “just right”.
