“Leveraging Relationships”

I was sitting in Le Pain Quotidien on 50th Street, waiting for a friend, when a man two table away began talking to his female companion.

“I am a Relationship Consultant,” he began in a loud voice. “I help people leverage their relationships.”

I turned to the man sitting next to me. “Didn’t we use to just call that ‘knowing people?'” I asked him.

“Nope,” he said, “I’d call it ‘blackmail.'”

Call me old-fashioned, but some days I get nostalgic for plain English.
