We are so blessed! We haven’t had a summer like this, according to the Weather Service, since 1985. Last year, for example, the 90-degree weather began in April(!!) and lasted all month, throughout May and July. Fortunately, the pattern has been that a hot June at least meant a mild August.
This is totally because of the fact that I did not have a working A/C for the past few years, so naturally I broiled. Then, my Knight-in-Shining-Armor managed to get me a wonderful, BIG, “green” air conditioner, and I have barely had to use it so far. (It does save my life at night, however, as I sleep in a loft bed, and heat rises).
Of course, cool, dry weather is not good for the flowers. But Wednesday we may — just may — hit 90 and the thunderstorms will return. (I admit, a powerful thunderstorm is my favorite form of entertainment).
Maybe this trend will continue for a little longer, and I’ll have sensible temperatures for the 4th, my birthday on Monday, and the 14th (my other national holiday: dual citizens get to have more fun!) Then let’s pray that August is reasonable, and we’re home free!Meanwhile, I’m a VERY happy camper!
When I think of it, I spent the first 25 or 30 years of my life in Chicago (and California) without an A/C, and I seem to have survived. Back in the day, hot nights meant Linda Dormody would come to our house for ***authentic!*** chocolate ice cream sodas in real soda glasses (called “black-and-whites” in NY; or “egg creams,” if the vanilla ice cream is left out), as my dad worked in a drugstore when he was a boy and learned how to make them. Or, we’d go to the Dormody’s, and her dad would make us root beer (or Coke) black cows: Yum! Will stock up on ice cream, chocolate sauce and seltzer for the 4th!!
I will not, however, thread red-white-and-blue striped crèpe paper through the spokes of my bike and go to the parade in Evanston with Linda, much as I’d like to. Them days are over (sigh!)
Linda (aka Dorm) — in Naples, FL — will be watching Jimmy Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy for the 4th, as she does every year: do you have a favorite movie for the holiday?
Hope your 4th is a good one!!!
[PS: we also have not had rain on a Saturday or Sunday since Memorial Day. Wonderful!]
